I just realized that this is as good a place as any to make mention of Dorte Jakobsen's 2010 Global Reading Challenge, which is basically a challenge to broaden your reading a bit in the new year.Take the easy, medium or expert challenge, and then plunge right in and read books from all over the world. The idea is to review them on your blog or website or whatever as you go, but if that sounds intimidating, just remember that a review can be as simple as "I liked it".
A lot of the folks doing the challenge will be reading crime fiction, but don't feel limited to that if it's not your thing. I probably won't be sticking to that myself.
At first I thought it was just the challenge itself that was intriguing, but what will really be intriguing is the accumulation of reviews and recommendations.
What are you waiting for? Hop on over and have a look.

ReplyDeletePublicity always helps - at least half the participants are people I don´t know at all, because several kind bloggers have posted about this.
I'll be interested to see whom you read for this challenge. I don't think I'll take part formally, since my entire blog is a global challenge, but I like the idea, and I shall follow its progress with interest.
ReplyDeleteAs it happens, I think the upcoming Gabriel Hunt novel from Hard Case Crime, due in April and written by Christ Faust, includes scenes at the South Pole. And that qualifies it for Dorte's challenge, I think.

No, I can see it would be a bit redundant for you, Peter. Going for the easy level seems a bit too easy, but I have some other reading challenges and a book group, and just once in awhile I'd like to read on impulse.
ReplyDeleteI'll post a preliminary list, here though, as I realize that that is sort of part of the whole thing.
I could probably already knock off the European challenge, having read Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in the first days of the year, but I thought it would be good to read something that was not English, Irish or Scandinavian for this, just to stretch myself a bit.
Sounds like a challenge of your own, Seana's non-Englisn, Irish or Scandinavian Challenge.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I could give myself an anti-global challenge: Read a book by an American author with an American setting ...

Yes, one American book in the next year doesn't seem like it will take you too far from your original mission...
